Late June 2006, a proposition entered. An opportunity from the National
RowingFoundation: The Royal Henley Regatta overseas in the UK.
Because the support of the NRF, the 2006 US Women’s Eight found
its first sense of confidence, as we nabbed wins at the Henley Royal
Regatta easily over the Dutch and nearly easily over the British.
I can still hear Mary’s calls for Circles! as we cleared the yacht wakes,
rock solid and s hark-like, setting every course record over the Historic
2,112 meters of the log-boom-lined Thames Course.
Two years later, on August 17th, 2008, Mary’s voice boomed the word
Circles! over the cox box once again as the US Women’s Eight brought
home its first Olympic Gold at the 2,000-meter distance...the first in
a since long string of historic moments and American Dreams made
possible through the support of the National Rowing Foundation.
~ So why do I give, you ask?
