PRINCETON HOST FAMILIES BY
BETH COVIN AND KATIE FINCK GARDNER
The townspeople of Princeton have had a long history of
hosting rowers, both on the Collegiate and National Team levels.
The tradition goes back for many decades. In 1948, the University of
California, Berkeley Men’s 8+, won the National Championship on Lake
Carnegie, going on to win Gold at the 1948 London Olympics.
The team likely stayed with families in Princeton, as there were very
few hotels at the time.
Beth Covin and Katie Gardner co-chaired the host family program for
the Rio Quadrennial, after having been Host Moms for London 2012.
The host families provide housing at no cost, and help our rowers feel
at home, even though they come from all over the U.S.
We would like to thank our partners in Princeton. New Jersey Lt
Governor Kim Guadagno, Princeton Mayor Liz Lempert, David Covin
and the Princeton University Rowing Association, Kristin Appelget of
the Princeton University Office of Community Affairs, Mimi Omiecinski
of the Princeton Tour Company, Patrick De Deyne and the Carnegie
Lake Rowing Association and Kris Grudt and the Princeton National
Rowing Association.
